![]() ![]() The game's setting spans the West Indies with the three main cities of Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, along with numerous islands, sunken ships, and forts. Multiplayer also returns, albeit with only land-based modes and settings. Unlike previous games, gameplay elements focus more on the ship-based exploration of the seamless open world map, while also retaining the series' third-person land-based exploration, melee combat, and stealth system. A major plot element concerns the attempted establishment of an independent Pirate republic in the Caribbean. The main story is set in the West Indies during the Golden Age of Piracy from 1715 to 1722, and follows notorious Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, grandfather of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton / Connor and father of antagonist Haytham Kenway, as he searches for fortune and a mythical location called the Observatory, which is sought by both the Assassins and the Templars. The framing story is set in the 21st century and depicts the player as an employee of Abstergo Industries (a company used as a front by the modern-day Templars), who is manipulated into uncovering secrets related to the Assassin-Templar conflict and the precursor race known as the First Civilization. The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The game was released for Google Stadia in September 2021. It was later ported to the Nintendo Switch as part of The Rebel Collection alongside Assassin's Creed Rogue in December 2019. Black Flag was originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in October 2013 and a month later for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Its historical timeframe precedes that of Assassin's Creed III (2012), but its modern-day sequences succeed III 's own. ![]() ![]() The pandemic presented some unique challenges to producing “Wipeout,” however. “It would be heartbreaking if I wasn’t able to come back and produce the show again.” ![]() “I would say it’s the most important show of my career,” he says. Yet much of the production team remains the same, led by Kunitz, who is currently based at Lionsgate under an overall deal - but had negotiated the ability to still do “Wipeout” (which is produced by Endemol Shine North America) should it be brought back. The chemistry is fantastic.Īlso new to the mix is sideline reporter Camille Kostek. And that natural interaction as they’re yelling at the contestants is very different than what we’ve had before. It’s the pivotal moment if they can get through this obstacle, and do it faster than that last team did it, they’ll win the $25,000. “We designed the set so that the host booth is maybe nine feet away from the final obstacle,” he says. Kunitz says that’s where some of the best interaction takes place. In another change, for the first time, the hosts are actually stationed in the final “Wipeout” zone as contestants aim to complete the course. “But John Cena plays an amazing straight man to her sort of bad girl, and she does it all with such an innocence in her delivery.” “It took us a while to dial in how far we could take it,” says Henson. Providing those laughs are WWE star and actor Cena and “Nailed It” host and comedian Byer, who manages to toss in plenty of blue gags while still keeping it family-friendly. “I think America is ready to just have a just a silly, fun show that you don’t have to think too hard to enjoy and the whole family can get together and laugh.” “I always felt that this show was going to come back, that it was just a timing thing,” Kunitz says. ![]() Now, “Wipeout” 2.0 comes as audiences are in the midst of a global pandemic and also presumably looking for merriment. ![]() The original “Wipeout” launched in 2008, in the midst of the economic crisis, and became the kind of feel-good show that viewers were looking for. “Creatively, we felt we felt like there was a way to update the format.” “I was looking for big, broad formats and I wanted a legacy franchise that I could bring back,” Henson says of the show, which went off the air in 2014. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That does not mean, however, that the writers of The Dig did not invent a romance to make the true story more movie-friendly. The film, however, does avoid the cliché of taking the real-life professional relationship of Pretty and Brown and turning it into a romance. The real-life Edith, meanwhile, died just a few years after the Sutton Hoo dig, after suffering a stroke in late 1942. Her husband Frank had died in 1934 after a battle with stomach cancer. At the time of the dig, she was a widow with a young son, Robert, born in 1930. Some of the details of the real Pretty's life, however, have remained. Both are based on real-life people – though the age-gap between them is an invention of the Netflix movie. In the Netflix movie, however, she is played by Mulligan, 35, acting alongside the 58-year-old Fiennes.Ĭarey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes as Edith Pretty and Basil Brown in 'The Dig'. In 1939, when the majority of The Dig is set, Pretty was 56, five years older than Brown, the amateur archaeologist she appointed to excavate some earth mounds on her Sutton Hoo estate in Ipswich, England. Hollywood's arguably sexist tendency to cast women who are much younger than the women they are portraying has long been the subject of jokes, and so is the case in The Dig with landowner Edith Pretty-ironic, as she is played by Carey Mulligan, who has been criticising sexism in the media recently following a controversial review of her film Promising Young Woman by Variety. However, Netflix has decided that it is a story worth telling-though they have made some typically Hollywood changes to the film to amp up some of the details. Real archaeology (as opposed to the whip-cracking, globe-trotting type dreamed up by the Indiana Jones movies) is a slow and laborious process, and as such seems an unlikely topic for a starry movie. ![]() The Dig is the latest movie released by Netflix, which is a dramatic retelling of the Sutton Hoo archeological discovery of the late 1930s, which saw amateur archeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) discover an ancient burial mound full of amazing Anglo-Saxon artifacts. ![]() ![]() ![]() The crew is dead and there are hostile creatures called Necromorphs lurking about. The story, however, is the same as the original 2008 title, where Clarke is tasked to repair the USG Ishimura mining ship, only to discover something has gone horribly wrong. In a blog post, creative director Roman Campos-Oriola also revealed that this new version will cut down on camera cuts and loading screens - unless you die - akin to God of War (2018), where the entire game plays out as one sequential shot. However, developer Motive Studio did iterate that Clarke will only speak when spoken to, or in places where it made sense.įirst announced in 2021, the studio has been fairly open with the development process on the Dead Space remake, offering glimpses at concept art, gameplay, and camera effects to community members, who then gave appropriate feedback. Unlike the original 2008 game, the sequel added voice lines for our protagonist - a trait that will follow through and be built upon in the upcoming Dead Space remake. Set three years after the events of the original, Dead Space 2 finds our protagonist Clarke on the Sprawl, a giant space station orbiting around Saturn, kitted to fight another horde of the bloodthirsty Necromorphs, as he deals with demented visions of his dead girlfriend. Aside from that, the game is included for free as part of the EA Play subscription on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, which starts at Rs. 999/ $20, making this pre-order deal a decent affair. (Of course, don't expect the two to look the same.) Given the original Dead Space was merely 11 hours long, it's hard to expect a longer runtime for its remake as well, which is where the sequel comes in handy.Įxcluding sales, Dead Space 2 is generally priced at Rs. ![]() This allows new players who never experienced space engineer Isaac Clarke's claustrophobic journey, to dive straight into its follow-up story, right after. Those who purchase EA Motive's reimagining of the 2008 survival-horror game up until launch day - January 27 - will be granted the sequel at no additional cost. Dead Space remake pre-orders on Steam come bundled with a free copy of the original Dead Space 2. ![]() ![]() ![]() After seeing so many projects try and fail to tap into our nostalgia for the past, doing so just seems like a fool’s errand. Over the past few decades though, as I’ve fruitlessly attempted to recreate the highs of that RPG experience ( Xenogears came close), I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s impossible. That’s a game I was eager to play when it was originally released in 2000, but I never quite clicked with it because it was so dramatically different from my beloved Chrono Trigger. ![]() Playing Radical Dreamers also made me excited to give Chrono Cross another chance. In many ways, it was the escape I needed from dealing with a colicky infant all day. It feels more like reading an adventurer's journal than playing an actual game, but I ended up caring for these characters quite a bit. While it's far from Chrono Trigger's epic time-hopping journey, I found myself instantly vibing with Radical Dreamers. (It was a surprise to find that some of Chrono Cross's sweeping melodies first appeared in this simple text-only title.) Some gorgeous artwork helps to paint a picture of your journey, while Yasunori Mitsuda's music once again envelopes you in a unique atmosphere. Like your typical text adventure, the game involves lots of reading, creating a mental map of your travels and making a few choices (like the direction you're moving, or deciding to attack or dodge in battle). You play as Serge, a young thief working together with his rambunctious companion Kid and a mysterious cloaked mage named Magil. It also helps that Radical Dreamers is relatively simple. But it turns out I can still make room for a text adventure title on the Switch – it's something I can play while my daughter is busy with her Lego creations, or while I pray for my son to stay asleep at night. I haven't had much time to play any games since the birth of my son three months ago. It's somewhat fitting that Radical Dreamers finds me now, when I'm juggling family life with a toddler and a newborn. Now with the Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition, I finally have an easy way to catch up on both of Chrono Trigger's follow-ups. ![]() For whatever reason - maybe it was the daily struggle to survive as an adult, or working like crazy to get into the prestigious world of tech reporting - I never got around to playing it. So, for the past few decades, the only way to play a translated version of Radical Dreamers was through an unofficial ROM hack. ![]() |
